Did You Know?
Elizabeth Rusch does not own the copyright to her book Girls’ Tennis: Conquering the Court?

Elizabeth Rusch says: Girls' Tennis was a work-for-hire. What is a work-for-hire? Sometimes a publisher will offer a writer a flat fee to write the text for a book. The book may be part of a series. Or the publisher may know exactly what they want in the book. The writer follows guidelines to write the text, and the publisher owns the copyright. For publishers, it’s a way to retain control over the content and to avoid paying royalties. For a writer, it can be a fun a way to write about a topic of interest and earn some extra cash. I played tennis on my high school team and still love to whack the ball around, so it was a fun project.
